I'm Afraid

Whoa, wait... you want to photograph us in our home?!

You love the look of documentary photography but it scares you because it's different.  You have a hard time envisioning what YOU would do or how it would look.  You wonder how much cleaning you will have to do if someone is in your home.  You feel unsure, a little afraid even...

These are real fears people have had when they see documentary-style photographs.  It looks and sounds appealing to them, BUT there are things that hold some people back.  And that's OK!  We are used to dressed up and posed professional photos.  They make people feel beautiful and feel good about themselves.  Those kinds of photos are beautiful.  BUT, they are not for everyone.  And that's OK too!

I love beautiful scenery and beautiful clothes, but I have a MUCH stronger connection to experiences, real life relationships, and personalities showcased in BEAUTIFUL ways in my professional photos.  These are the photos I look through the most often.  These are the photos that tell my great stories.  These are the photos that bring up emotions and STOP TIME for me.  I want that for YOU!

I have a client that had many of the same fears and insecurities listed above.  After her documentary session, I asked her what surprised her the most about their experience, and what she enjoyed the most.  This is what she wrote...

"I was afraid it would be awkward or unnatural, but it wasn't at all.  It was as if you weren't even there most of the time and the time flew by!  We all ended up being very comfortable.  I was afraid we would be too boring or not give you enough subject matter and I was afraid the kids would be too poised or awkward, but I don't think that was the case at all.
Just enjoying the day with my family knowing that these everyday experiences would be preserved.  But the best part was getting the photo album and seeing the fruits of your labor.  We all love it!!!" -T

I want getting photographs taken to be wonderful and relaxing for you and not a chore.  There's no acting, you don't have to coordinate outfits (unless that is something you enjoy doing with your family daily!), no deep cleaning of your home (Seriously, if you want to pick up that's fine, but some messes tell the story.  What about that epic building project your kids are working on?  You do not need to have a magazine-styled home!), no one is missing from the action (because I'm doing the documenting!).  It doesn't need to be inside your home, it can be outside.  It's just you being YOU.  I want you to think, "that is totally US!" when you look at your documentary style photographs.  I want you to remember the feelings and emotion behind those moments because it's real, and real is BEAUTIFUL too!

I know you are curious, and there is no obligation what-so-ever, but if you Click HERE to request a fun and easy challenge that will prompt a walk down memory lane, it will generate reasons why a story-telling session (my documentary sessions) would be a fearless choice for you and your family.  I'm certain it will stir up ideas and smiles!

What fears do you have about story-telling photography?  Send me your questions you may have!

P.S. I'm not afraid to show you some of my mess!  We call this the messy room.  This table always has stuff all over it.  Drawings, homework, play dough, miscellaneous small toys or games.  Sometimes those jars and containers are spilled across the surface so they can find what they want.  My boys LOVE this spot and it's a part of our life!
